How do I protect my friendship if serious dating fails?

I have a female friend that I have known for about 8-9 years. Completely platonic. We knew each other while we we both in our past marriages. Being both divorced now we are considering serious dating. We are both scared of losing the friendship if the dating does not pan out. How can we protect the friendship if serious dating does not work out????t
