Transmission works weird in cold?

Every morning when I'm off to school in my 1998 Plymouth Breeze Expresso with like 140000 miles, i back out of my drive way that has a bit slope. with that slope i have to stop at the end of the driveway. But when i stop at the end and check for cars, the car is acting as if it were in neutral. its automatic and it only does this gay **** when its like 35 degrees or lower. why in the heck does this car do this in cold weather
