What is spyware and what does it do?

I'm very computer illiterate. We got high speed net with Verizon and we downloaded the security system in and it found so many spy ware things on different site I was on. The list was so long. We deleted all of them. What is spy ware and how does it affect the computer? I need all you computer geniuses to help me out. Thanks
