Turtle beach X1 Problem - How to fix?

Basically when in xbox live chat i hear people talking only if i turn up my mic which in turn makes the mic symbol next to my name go away, if i turn it down again which makes it reappear i cant hear anyone speak, any ideas? i might have config'd it wrong although i followed all instructions to a tee. Thanks for your time.
